Two food trucks outfitted with robotic woks are roaming around Foster City, San Francisco Business Times reports. The Olhso Korean BBQ & Seafood trucks, which have arrived in the Bay Area via Seoul, require only one human employee: a driver. In the trucks’ interior, the “auto wok” cooks ingredients and assembles finished meals in paper bowls, timing its orders via a smartphone app so that they’re served hot upon delivery. Four dishes are available, including galbi short ribs and kimchi shrimp with pork belly — and prices range from $25 to $55. Per the Business Times, Olhso is also planning a permanent restaurant in San Mateo. For now, the trucks are sticking to the Foster City area, but they may expand to broader San Mateo County in the future.

Sonoma County farmworkers protested by the hundreds in Healdsburg on July 28, advocating for both higher wages and hazard pay to account for the impact of heatwaves and wildfires, CBS News reports. Workers say they should be paid additional money when working in dangerous conditions like smoky air and excessive heat — they also want compensation for the days when such conditions cause them to be cut from work early, and to lose out on crucial wages that help them support their families. “This industry, this wine industry, is very rich,” farmworker Isidro Rodriguez told CBS. “They are not paying us what we deserve. If we weren’t taking care of these plants, none of them would exist.”
The owner of San Francisco’s mobile coffee truck California Kahve has found herself the owner of Golden Gate Park’s beloved, century-old carousel, per this fun scoop from SFGATE. Molly Welton now runs the carousel and its petite food kiosk, and plans to open in mid- or late August with sandwiches, pastries, smoothies, and, of course, coffee. Welton told SFGATE she wants to put a “spotlight” on the carousel: “It just feels like this magical and iconic thing that needs a refresh. It’s kind of hidden and forgotten about.”
Chef David Nayfeld is inviting a line-up of accomplished chefs to his restaurant Che Fico for the dinner series, “Che Fico and Friends,” that kicks off this August. The series will take place at both the restaurant’s Menlo Park and San Francisco locations — further details can be found on the website. Notable names so far include Danielle Alvarez of the Sydney Opera House, Chad Colby of LA’s Antico Nuovo, and Hillary Sterling of Ci Siamo in New York.
