Sharpak Launches the first fully recyclable Mono PET Coffee Cup Lid, Reducing Plastic Waste | Grocery Trader

Sharpak, a leader in innovative packaging solutions, proudly announces the launch of its groundbreaking mono PET coffee cup lid. This innovative product is designed to replace traditional non-recyclable polystyrene (PS) lids, offering a recyclable alternative that does not compromise on functionality or consumer experience.

A Game-Changer for Sustainability:

Sharpak, recognising the need for more sustainable packaging in the coffee market, has developed a PET recyclable lid that aligns with the circular economy and sustainability principles of both Sharpak and Groupe Guillin. The new lid addresses the significant environmental challenge posed by PS lids, which are widely used but not recyclable.

Overcoming Material Challenges:

Historically, PET has not been used for hot beverage lids due to its ‘memory’ property, which causes it to revert to its original flat form when heated, making it unstable for coffee cups. However, leveraging its renowned technical expertise and manufacturing capabilities, Sharpak has overcome this challenge. The company’s unique manufacturing process, developed at its Yate site, ensures that the mono PET lid remains stable even at hot drink temperatures, providing a safe and reliable option for consumers.

Consumer Experience:

One major advantage of the PET lid is that, unlike other fibre-based options, it delivers the same drinking experience and feel on the mouth as PS lids. It also has the same visual appearance as PS lids. This consistency is crucial for coffee brands that prioritize consumer experience.

Environmental Impact:

The introduction of the mono PET coffee cup lid is a significant step forward in sustainability. This innovative solution can be collected for recycling at kerbside, putting valuable material back into the supply chain, supporting a circular economy. For every 100 million 12-16oz coffee cup lids switched from PS to PET, 350 metric tons of non-recyclable plastic are removed from the market.
